Jewish Family Service offers a comprehensive array of sophisticated clinical, psychological and psychiatric services to help children, teens and their families cope with the stresses of school, family problems, peers and other life events. By working with youth to achieve their potential, Jewish Family Service provides a vital service for Hampton Roads’ families.

Counseling Services

Counseling can be helpful to children and teens who are having difficulties at home, in school, or with peers. The licensed, highly trained clinical staff provides specialized therapeutic services to children, teens and families experiencing problems. Restoring family balance is a sensitive and complex task. Only after careful study and consultation with the child/teen and his or her family is a plan of care established.

Counseling services available are:

JFS is a place where solutions are sought, growth is nurtured and family balance is restored. JFS provides total confidentiality and a warm, trusting environment inwhich to work on problems.

Diagnostic Evaluation

A child’s or teen's difficulties may manifest themselves in a myriad of ways. To correctly pinpoint counselling needed, JFS’ clinical staff can arrange for the following evaluations from its consulting staff:

Psychological Evaluation

Psychological evaluation and testing are tools for revealing a broad range of information related to a child’s problems. For example, intellectual and psycho-educational tests may reveal that a child’s academic difficulties are the result of a learning disability such as attention deficit disorder. Projective tests allow the professional to see the world through a child’s eyes while exploring his or her personality.

Psychiatric Evaluation

Difficulty in concentration or changes in sleeping or eating patterns may signal the presence of a more serious problem that requires medical treatment. Jewish Family Service’s consulting child psychiatrist will evaluate the child and, if medication is prescribed, will monitor the medical portion of a comprehensive treatment approach.

Parent Resource Center

In today’s society, new parents often lack the support networks their parents had such as: extended families, neighbors and peers. Many find child rearing an isolating experience. The JFS Parent Resource Center provides a network of support helping parents and caretakers learn more about parenting issues. A broad spectrum of parenting materials are available through a lending library of videos, magazines/journals and books.

Fees and Quality Control

Jewish Family Service has served the Tidewater community for more than 80 years. Recognized by the Council for Accreditation of Services for Family and Children, JFS Services for Children and Adolescents continue this tradition of excellence.

The program and its services may be covered by both public and private insurance companies. Clinical professionals are carefully recruited and specially trained. The entire program is supervised and its services delivered by experienced professionals with a clear perception of family needs.

Fees are competitive and framed on a sliding scale according to the ability to pay. Members of the administrative staff are available to help with Tricare, Blue Cross and other public and private insurance reimbursements.
