"No one told me what was happening." Facing grief is a mighty task, one no person should have to face alone. All members of a family experience grief following the loss of a loved one. If you are old enough to love, youre old enough to grieve." YOU ARE NOT ALONE . . . Whether it is the loss of a parent, sibling, close relative or a good friend, children and teens often find comfort and understanding in the arms of others who have faced similar losses. Others may need more support than peers can give, the kind a grief specialist can offer. That is why Jewish Family Service of Tidewater has established the Dozoretz Center For Family Healing. We want families to know that they are not alone ... we can help. Everyone heals differently. Each family member heals differently after a loss. Many will mourn over time, while going about their daily routines and maintaining relationships. They have found the best way to help themselves heal. Others find themselves feeling isolated, disconnected and afraid. Some may have trouble sleeping, doing schoolwork or engaging in activities as usual.
Our staff of grief specialists can conduct a family grief assessment to determine the needs of each family member. Recommendations can then be made for counseling with one of our specialists or for referral to Edmarc Hospice for Childrens Peace by Piece program of peer support groups. About JFS grief specialists. "I cry silently when Im alone because I dont want my friends to see. I hurt so badly inside." Just like adults, children and teens also want to protect their family from feeling hurt. They may do this by hiding their own feelings. Our grief specialists can provide a safe place for children to cry openly, get angry, express their private feelings and begin to heal from the loss of their loved one. All of our counselors have specialized training and experience in helping children, teens and their families cope with the issues that arise from grief, loss and other family transitions. The Center receives consultative services from its Medical Director, who is a Board Certified, Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Additionally, JFS can provide educational materials, consult with school personnel and give necessary referrals to community resources for further assistance. What about cost? Counseling services are available to those people in the community who are touched by a loss, regardless of race, religion or economic situation. Services may be covered by your health insurance carrier, or can be set according to the agencys sliding fee scale, which is based on income and ones ability to pay. Consultative services are also available according to the sliding fee scale. Children find solace in the arms of other children. What is Peace by Piece? Peace by Piece is an interfaith program offering peer support groups for grieving children and teens, sponsored by Edmarc Hospice for Children in collaboration with Jewish Family Service. Well-trained volunteer facilitators lead each twice-monthly group session. A licensed mental health professional from JFS, trained in grief counseling, is on sight at all times to assist. Parent support groups are available concurrently, if parents wish to attend. If a child, teen or their family should need additional services, JFS grief specialists are available to offer continuing care or to provide the family with alternate referral information.
