Families Finding Strength

A Support Group for Families Living With Cancer

What is Families Finding Strength? Families Finding Strength is a multi-generational support system designed to help families maintain an optimal quality of life as they struggle through the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This free support group offers an age appropriate forum for children, teenagers and older adults. Programs include:

A peer support group for school-aged children who have an adult in their life diagnosed with cancer. This group will span a six week period and offer age sensitive discussions about cancer and how it is impacting their life.

A voluntary caregiver/parent meeting runs concurrently with the children's support group, offering an opportunity for discussions about parenting during this difficult time. Resource information from community experts and the American Cancer Society are also available to this group.

A teen socialization events offer team building exercises designed to teach teens how to use extended networks of family and friends to cope during this difficult time. Activities take place twice a year and be designed around engaging activities, such as rock-wall climbing, skating, etc.

A series of workshops/lectures targeting older adults who may have a spouse or adult child diagnosed with cancer. This series is available in traditional lecture format, as well as through an interactive conference call system making it accessible to people who cannot attend in person. The curriculum is varied and flexible, depending on the make up of the group and the interests of those participating.
