Special Needs: In 1991, the Board of Rights of Virginians
with Disabilities awarded a grant jointly to the Jewish Family Service of Tidewater and
the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond. A direct outgrowth of that award is the
implementation of services at JFS to children and adults with special needs and their
families. JFS offers innovative, caring services to special needs clients.-
Family Support Network: Families of adults with developmental
disabilities meet monthly to provide ongoing support and encouragement. Speakers familiar
with systems impacting developmentally disabled adults attend the meetings and offer
practical information on needed services.
-
Chaverim Support Group: Chaverim is a culturally sensitive social and recreational
group comprised of developmentally disabled adults. The group celebrates Jewish holidays
and attends cultural and sporting events. Meetings are scheduled twice monthly at the
Jewish Community Center.
-
MESA (Mutual Education Support and Advocacy): MESA is a weekly support group for
family members of the chronically mentally ill. The group provides information related to
chronic mental illness, its management and medical alternatives. Families are assisted in
becoming advocates for their chronically ill family member.
In addition to recreational and support groups, JFS offers individual and family
counseling, case management and advocacy services to special needs individuals and their
families.
Jewish Family Service also offers Services for Children with Special Needs.
For more information about these services please contact Jewish Family Service.
