With age, the independence once taken for granted in youth becomes increasingly valuable.
For many, the home in which they have lived for years - even decades - becomes the cornerstone of that independence.
Familiar surroundings and neighbors provide stability and comfort and also a new trend named Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities or NORC.

|
What is a NORC?
A Naturally Occurring Retirement Community is a neighborhood or complex where residents may live for years, aging as neighbors. Whether a specific apartment building or a street of single family homes, a NORC is any area where residents have established a longstanding living arrangement, complete with neighbors and familiarity.

Jewish Family Service of Tidewater believes that identifying NORCs in the Tidewater Community and then implementing supportive services to community members will help
maintain freedom and independence for aging adults in their own homes.
Who Can Participate?
Anyone over 60 and residing in a NORC identified community.
How Does it Work?
A NORC Residents’ Council helps plan programs and events in which community members are encouraged to become active participants.
What is the Goal?
Enable individuals and couples to maintain independent lifestyles and meet their social, cultural, educational, health and wellness needs.
